NIH Workshop on Music and Health
Music & the Brain: Research Across the Lifespan

Neuroscientists, music therapists, and supporters of both biomedical research and the arts convened on the NIH campus to discuss the current landscape of research on the interaction of music and the brain as well as how music is used as therapy. The workshop was split into three sessions covering the lifespan 鈥 鈥淏uilding:鈥 Music and the Child鈥檚 Brain, 鈥淓ngaging:鈥 Music and the Adult Brain, and 鈥淪ustaining:鈥 Music and the Aging Brain, with each session including a panel on fundamental science and therapeutic applications. As a result of this workshop, recommendations for further research to advance both the fundamental science of music鈥檚 interaction with the brain as well as the therapeutic applications of music were identified.聽
